The Myth of Independence: Why We Need Each Other to Thrive

Written by: Jessica Grace

Western culture glorifies self-sufficiency. We celebrate the lone genius, the hero who rises alone. But in reality? No one thrives in isolation.

From birth, we rely on others. We are shaped, supported, and uplifted by the people around us. Interdependence is not a weakness—it’s how we survive and flourish.

The Illusion of Separation

Somewhere along the way, we bought into a false narrative—what author Charles Eisenstein calls the Story of Separation. We began to see ourselves as isolated individuals, acting independently in an indifferent world.

But we are not separate.

  • No human has ever raised themselves.
  • No great achievement happens in a vacuum.
  • No business succeeds without the contributions of many.

Despite the myth of rugged individualism, we know the truth: Every success is built on connection and collaboration.

The Healing Power of Asking for Help

In a society obsessed with self-reliance, asking for help can feel uncomfortable—even vulnerable. But here’s the truth:

People want to be needed.

When we allow others to support us, we don’t just meet our own needs—we give them the gift of purpose, contribution, and connection.

So do something radical today: Ask for what you need.

  • Seek help on a project.
  • Let a friend support you.
  • Recognize the value others bring to your life and work.

The more we embrace interdependence, the more we dissolve the illusion of separateness.

Interdependence in Business and Beyond

The same principle applies in business. We like to project independence—our genius alone shaping the future. But behind every success story is a network of collaborators, mentors, and communities who made it possible.

When we acknowledge the contributions of others, we create momentum. We build loyalty, trust, and shared purpose. This is how teams thrive. This is how movements grow.

A New Story: Thriving Together

We are part of an interconnected web—within our communities, our businesses, and the natural world. Recognizing this truth isn’t just about connection—it’s about survival.

So, let’s rewrite the story. Let’s embrace the power of interdependence.

Because the path to thriving has never been walked alone.
